Lt. Liam McCarthy's Commissioning and parade
Hingham native and United States Military Academy at West Point graduate Liam McCarthy was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S Army on Saturday. Lt. McCarthy graduated from the Academy earlier this spring.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, the solemn moment took place virtually in the McCarthy's yard. The commissioning oath was read and the bars placed, as the second lieutenant stood in front of the American flag. After the second lieutenant received the second lieutenant bars, he received his first salute from his grandfather, a retired member of the Air Force with payment of a silver dollar. The Army tradition represents the receipt of respect due the graduate’s new rank and position.
The commissioning ceremony was followed by a special parade organized by family friend Thomas Hoffman. Hoffman wanted to honor the newly commissioned officer for his commitment to serve the country.
Lt. McCarthy and his family lined up on Lantern Lane to watch the parade led by Hingham Police and Fire followed by family and friends. Residents gathered along the parade route to celebrate.
