Lights-out Pitching Sparks Hingham-Hull to State Championship Bracket
By Greg Lane, Sept. 6th, 2020
The Hingham Hull Babe Ruth 14U All-Star team made the most of every moment in the first round of the state 2020 COVID Cup Championship Series.
The team clinched a spot in the championship bracket on Saturday. Chris Volpe delivered 6 fabulous innings finishing with 11 strikeouts and Jake Schulte tossed a scoreless inning in relief to shutout division opponent Marshfield in a 9-0 victory.
Coach Mike Devlin shared afterwards, “Volpe was in control throughout. He is just on fire right now.”
The key moment of the game occurred in the bottom of the first inning. With two runners in scoring position, Schulte laced a triple to centerfield to put Hingham-Hull up 2-0 and the team never looked back.
The 14U All-Star team finished 3-1 during the eight-day 14-team tournament and Hingham-Hull’s pitching staff was the true MVP of the series.
The team opened the tournament with a double-header against defending state champions Plymouth. Chris Volpe, Jake Schulte and Chris Swirbalus dominated, giving up only two 2 runs in fourteen innings, but splitting the series.
Plymouth took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game one on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by DC Brown. Hingham tied the game in the top of the third after Griffin Coppola reached base on a hard line drive, eventually scoring. Plymouth responded with a go ahead run in the bottom of the third to win 2-1. After the third inning of game one, Hingham pitchers answered combining for 10 shutout innings propelling them to a 3-0 win in game two.
The lights-out pitching in game one was followed up with Brady Lane striking out ten batters in a 4-2 victory against rival Weymouth.
“We have depth at pitching and great defense,” added Devlin.
Hingham-Hull returns to action on Tuesday in a single elimination game against a South Pool-A team.
“We hope your players enjoyed the extra competition and being able to play more baseball with their friends.” said Brian Kintz Babe Ruth Massachusetts District 4 & 7 Commissioner after the completion of the four game play-in tournament.
